Taming the Office Wilderness

Throughout my career, I have encountered some peculiar workplace situations that taught me valuable lessons in how to navigate the workplace wilderness without compromising integrity. Surprisingly, some of those lessons came from the personification of animals in childhood favorites: Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, George Orwell's Animal Farm, and Robert C. O'Brien's Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

Every workplace has its jungle, farm, and community filled with individuals motivated by loyalty, ambition, survival, or self-interest.

WARNING: This guide is designed to help navigate deceptive "domesticated" office creatures. Proceed with caution, caffeine, and a solid escape plan.

The Snake: The intuitive strategist. Observant and adaptable, but sometimes secretive. Handle with facts, documentation, and discretion.

The Weasel: The resourceful survivor. Creative and solution-focused, but does not take accountability for their mishaps. Set clear expectations.

The Rat: The industrious observer. Intelligent and detail-oriented. Never underestimate this quiet professional.

The Boar: The determined powerhouse. Strong and persistent, but may overpower collaboration. Approach with confidence, facts, and boundaries.

This PSA is not to evoke fear of every creature in the workplace. It is to develop awareness, maintain integrity, and understand how to navigate relationships strategically.

Know the wilderness. Know yourself. Your greatest professional survival skill is how you choose to show up.
